Real Leather vs Faux Leather

Natural Grain Texture: Each real leather piece comes with a unique set of surface patterns, natural pores, and subtle imperfections which in turn gives it a distinct character.

What is Real Leather :

As real leather ages it takes in natural oils and what is known as a patina also forms which in turn better the look of the piece over the years. Breathability: Real leather’s pores allow for air flow which in turn which makes genuine leather very comfortable to wear in different weather conditions.

What is Faux Leather?

Faux leather (also known as synthetic, vegan, PU leather or leatherette) is a man made material which is put out to look and feel like natural hide. It is usually made by applying a polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating to a fabric base of polyester or cotton.

Key Characteristic of Faux Leather:

Uniform Appearance: Faux leather has a very even look without natural blemishes or color variations. Water Resistance: The synthetic plastic coating present in faux leather makes it very water and spill resistant. Affordability: Also because it is mass produced synthetically faux leather is much cheaper to produce and purchase.

Real Leather vs Faux Leather:

In order to help you decide which material is the best for you we will break them down in terms of key performance areas:

1. Durability and Longevity

Real Leather: is the best in terms of durability. A high quality real leather jacket may last 10 to 20 years or more with proper care. Also it does a great job at resisting tear, puncture and abrasion.

Faux Leather: has a lower life span of usually 2 to 5 years. Over time it’s exposure to sun and flexing cause the outer plastic layer to crack, peel or flake off.

2. Look, Feel and Flexibility :

Real Leather: is soft and supple and over time actually molds to the wearers body shape. It has a rich earthy smell which synthetics don’t have.

Faux Leather: feels a bit stiffer and cooler to the touch. While modern high end PU leathers may look very real from a distance they still don’t have the natural warmth, grain depth and that signature leather smell of real hide.

3. Breathability and Comfort

Real Leather: is naturally breathable so it does a great job at regulating body temperature which in turn keeps you warm in cool weather without causing you to overheat.

Faux Leather: is not porous due to its plastic coating which in turn causes it to trap in heat and moisture which may cause discomfort in warm weather or during extended wear.

4. Maintenance and Care

Real Leather: requires regular care which includes conditioning every 6 to 12 months to prevent the hide from drying out or cracking. Also it has to be kept away from excessive water.

Faux Leather: is very low maintenance. Choose Natural Leather when: You look at outerwear as a long term investment, value the real texture and breathability and into the classic look of aged natural leather. Go for Faux Leather if: You are after a fashion piece which is a little more of a budget play, prefer easy care garments, or are into animal free materials.
